Monophonic
Ringtones In the beginning, phones could only play
monophonic ring tones These usually consisted of short

Polyphonic
Ringtones This type can play multiple notes using

etc). Recent phones are able to play complex polytones.
Some can play up to 128 individual notes with different
instruments reproducing a realistic sound. Most new
handsets have now iimproved speakers to produce better
sound quality. Many phones
support SMAF (.mmf) files that can render 128 notes at
once. This is based on a sound format devised by Yamaha.
Music
Ringtones The latest version of handsets, Series 60,
Symbian or smartphones, use actual pieces of music, along
with all lyrics and the entire song backing music.
Manufacturers, e.g. Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson,
are including voice ring tones on their newly released
phones.
